TEN DAYS

By Wednesday, the school starts to get the sense that the four of us aren’t messing around. Because for the third straight day, me, Marshall, Bree, and Ali wear our gay shirts.

And we have ten effing days to go.

For the record, I really don’t know what’s going to happen when the clock—er, our shirts—strike zero. A few people in Yearbook think we’ve devised some master scheme for the Senior Beach-Bum Party. The joke’s on them, though.

“Wait, are you going to ask Ali to prom?” Marshall whispers into my ear as we leave Trig, Ali just steps behind us. Our shirts are still drawing smiles, high fives, and curious stares; Ali is too distracted by the attention to notice we’re talking about him.

“No,” I whisper back, like Marshall should know that by now. “Well… I’m probably not going to. I don’t think. Right?”

“I—”

“That’s not the point of the shirts.”

“True.”

“The whole point of our shirts is to shove it in Cliff’s face.”

“Right.”

“I’m not letting some asshole ruin my life.”

“Exactly.”

“But should I ask Ali?”

No. No, I shouldn’t. I’m over him.

But what if people expect me to, now that the e-blast hack happened? It feels like everyone’s been rallying around the two of us as if we’re an unlikely rom-com pairing that’ll end up happily ever after. This whole thing’s starting to feel bigger than just me and what I want to do for prom.

“Do you want my honest opinion?” Marshall asks.

I nod.

He checks to make sure Ali is still out of earshot. “You deserve to go to prom with someone who sees you like you used to see Ali,” he says with a shrug. “And that’s… probably not Ali.” He cringes. “Sorry.”
